IF you want to keep up to date with what Iām up to the best place to find me is on instagram: @stella_wray
This is where i share all my current practices and my interests/ whats inspiring me at the moment!
I didn’t even say what the final outcome was the last post. But I want to screen print these I felt inspired after seeing @hdcgallery do some sick ones today but I also owe the woman in uni for my last screen š¤š¤ might make a A-Z Map of ELLA-MARIE. This is a collage map of my 3 places of significance at the top you’ve got the ancestral work place of my grandads maternal side, then you’ve got the stomping grounds in the middle and then finally my current home. The red vein is the route from MAP A TO C passing through B .
Probably get rid of the red vein cause it’s shit
I like sharing stuff that isn’t at the final outcome because I’m not good at documenting process. I’ve been reading up a lot of pyschogeogrpahy and deep cartography. Looking into alternative map making. And interested in the works of Jeremy wood with his gps logging particularly ‘My ghost’ following his travels through London everyday for 15 years creating a map of his own of the city that can easily be recognised. I don’t have a gps tracker yet that I can create a log of my own travels and movements but I do have the internet and a Brain so here his a lovely walk you can all take a hike with on some key moments of my early life. I’ve provided some basic directions but like all great things it’s not about the destination it’s about the memories/ trauma you create along the way
If your curious to learn more about these places then please don’t bother asking and mind your own business š» I’m joking I love over sharing
love bricks not as much as a bar of hash but I think it’s really magical to find an old wall or building made a century or more ago and wonder who laid them and who made the bricks. Plus hash isn’t a good building utensil. Anyway, my personal favorite is a Pease brick. I’m from Darlington, and anything with the name ‘Pease’ hooks me—that’s just the way it is. But regardless of the name, I love the color. All the Pease bricks I’ve seen have been a pale beige color, though this isn’t always the case, as the photos show.
Anyway, a few times now, when getting the train home, Connor and I have spotted what we thought was an old kiln of some sort, with trees and undergrowth coming out from its foundations, just before you enter Yarm and Eaglescliffe via Northallerton on the train. So yesterday, I kept my eyes peeled in order to finally note roughly where it is and find out what the fuck it actually is.
Turns out it’s a brickworks! Picton Brickworks, to be exact (photo included from Hidden Teesside, not mine!). I know it sounds daft to be excited about finding out what an old building is, but to me, it’s better than dropping a pill. From trying to research more about this place, I found a website dedicated to cataloging bricks and explaining their composition, location, and sometimes maker. I’ve included a few screenshots of some things that sparked my interest, including the 16-year-old apprentice brickyard laborer from Stockport who left his stamp on history. I’ll come back and add the link to this site in case anyone wants to have a gander. Some really cool pages on the formation of bricks, as well as some unique ones that still have their makers’ fingerprints preserved all these years later. Photos in order:
1.pease brick in my family back garden 2.railway bridge on the old Barnard castle - Darlington line 3&4. Formations at Stanhopeburn 5&6. Thames shoreline bricks 7. William hill spotting some pease bricks while working 8. Picton brickworks. The rest are screenshots from https://www.brocross.com/Bricks/Penmorfa/Pages/england22.htm

The previous edit I had fallen out of love with and I much prefer this cyanotypeish moody pale blue to go with the setting. I cannot wait to be able to actually create cyanotypes and pinhole cameras of the landscape. Until then here’s some lightroom manipulations
